From a reader:
“One of my biggest takeaways from the SRC Mental Skills Workbook was the exercise that helps to reframe negative thoughts into positive thoughts. It sounds simple, but is more difficult to do in the moment. What happens when you’re in a race and start to feel tired? What pops into your mind? Thinking about these things beforehand, and making sure you have a game plan for not only your physical race, but your mental race can help immensely. One of the key things I picked up from this exercise is that our thoughts should be intentional, and the more we can become aware of our thoughts, the more room we have to make them intentional. Are the occasional negative thoughts going to happen? Sure. But, the more we can practice being able to turn those voices down and our positive ones up, the more we can begin to build on our positive self-talk.
The first time I did a mental skills exercise, it felt a little funny and uncomfortable. However, the more I became aware of my thoughts and self-talk, the more I realized how powerful they could be. The more I became aware of what was being said inside my own head, the more I realized I have a choice about what is said. Choosing positive thoughts takes practice, especially in situations where it can be easy to choose negative ones, and thinking about/writing it down beforehand can make it 1,000,000 times easier to make the switch when you’re in the moment.
